Description

"Know thy history. Let it horrify you; let it inspire you. Let it show you how the future can look, for nothing in this world has not come around before. These songs are based on slave narratives from the 1800s, African American experiences of the last century, and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and headlines from streets of Ferguson and Baltimore today. Voices demanding to be heard, to impart the hard-earned wisdom of a tangled, difficult, complicated history; we just try to open the door and let them through." Rhiannon Giddens

Freedom Highway, Grammy Awardwinner and 2017 Grammy nominee Rhiannon Giddens' follow-up to her highly praised debut album Tomorrow Is My Turn, will be released by Nonesuch Records on February 24, 2017. The record includes nine original songs Giddens wrote or co-wrote while she and her band toured after Tomorrow Is My Turn's 2015 release, along with a traditional song and two civil rights-era songs, "Birmingham Sunday" and Staple Singers' well-known "Freedom Highway," from which the album takes its name. Giddens and the band will tour the U.S. in the spring; details will be announced shortly.

Giddens' writing for Freedom Highway is a departure from Tomorrow Is My Turn, which included one original song, with the rest being her interpretations of songs written or performed by a wide variety of female musicians. Giddens co-produced Freedom Highway with multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell in his Breaux Bridge, Louisiana studio, with the bulk of recording done in wooden rooms built prior to the Civil War. As producers, Giddens and Powell sought to release the stories already in the walls, allowing the space to be a voice in itself. This approach allowed for an emotional fearlessness and presence not always easy to achieve in the studio. Together they assembled the players, which included her superb touring band, local musicians from the bayou, a soulful horn section from New York, and talented family members. The principle recording was done over an intense eight day period. The result is an album that is rawer and more personal than its predecessor.

Giddens wrote of the title track:

"I am a daughter of the South; of the white working class, of the black working class; of the Democrat, and the Republican; of the gay, and the straight; and I can tell you one thingwe are far more alike than we are different. We cannot let hate divide us; we cannot let ignorance diminish us; we cannot let those whose greed fills their every waking hour take our country from us. They can't take U.S. from USunless we let them. I recorded this with Bhi Bhiman, all-American singer-songwriter from St. Louis, whose parents are from Sri Lanka. America's strength are her people, whether they came 4,000, 400, or 40 years ago, and we can't leave anyone behind. Let's walk down Freedom Highway together. Written by Pops Staples in 1965."

Description

Rhiannon Giddens, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and founding member of Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, makes her solo recording debut with Tomorrow Is My Turn, due out February 10, 2015, on Nonesuch Records. (The vinyl will follow on March 3.) The album was produced by T Bone Burnett.

Burnett first worked with Giddens when she performed last fall at a concert he curated at New York City s Town Hall that was later broadcast on Showtime: Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis. Backstage, Burnett was immediately moved to ask if he could produce a record with her. It was clear the first time I heard her at rehearsal that Rhiannon is next in a long line of singers that include Marian Anderson, Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, Rosetta Tharpe, Burnett says. We need that person in our culture.

For her first solo disc, Giddens chose a broad range of songs from genres as diverse as gospel, jazz, blues, and country. In addition to the traditional Black Is the Color, tracks include Hank Cochran s She s Got You, made famous by Patsy Cline; Dolly Parton s Don't Let It Trouble Your Mind ; O Love Is Teasin , popularized by the Kentucky-reared mother of folk Jean Ritchie; and Elizabeth Cotton s Shake Sugaree.

I had already started putting together a list of songs that didn t really fit into the Chocolate Drops world, Giddens explains. At the top was Tomorrow Is My Turn [immortalized by Nina Simone]. Seeing Nina do it on YouTube was revelatory. I knew she d gone through a lot of hard times, as so many people did in that time period. Watching her sing this song, with the words tomorrow is my turn, I began to think about the struggle of her and women like her. The significance of this song led Giddens to make it the title of the album as well. Other songs started getting on my list and they were all by women or interpreted by women, she says.

Tomorrow Is My Turn was recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville, with a multi-generational group of players whom Burnett assembled. Among them are fiddle player Gabe Witcher and double bassist Paul Kowert of label-mates Punch Brothers; percussionist Jack Ashford of Motown s renowned Funk Brothers; drummer Jay Bellerose; guitarist Colin Linden; legendary backup singer Tata Vega; veteran Nashville session bassist Dennis Crouch; and Giddens Drops touring band-mates, multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and beat-boxer Adam Matta.

Tomorrow Is My Turn follows Giddens work with Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith, Jim James, and Marcus Mumford on Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album also produced by Burnett that was released in November 2014. Her contribution was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as the showstopper...evoking antebellum blues with a magnificent voice that interrogates the myths stirred up at Big Pink. The New York Times agreed, saying On lead vocals she s the album s revelation, singing melodies that hark back to Celtic modes with a decisive presence and a haunting grace.

NOMINATED FOR TWO 2017 GRAMMY AWARDS - BEST FOLK ALBUM AND BEST AMERICANA ROOTS PERFORMANCE
On the heels of her highly acclaimed solo debut Tomorrow Is My Turn, Rhiannon Giddens's five-song EP Factory Girl was first released on Nonesuch Records on November 27, 2015, to coincide with the Black Friday Record Store Day event, and became widely available, including digitally, December 11, 2015. The EP is culled from the same T Bone Burnettproduced sessions that yielded Tomorrow Is My Turn, which the Wall Street Journal said "confirms the arrival of a significant talent whose voice and distinctive approach communicate the simmering emotion at the core of the songs." Additionally, theLos Angeles Timescalled the album "a collection that should solidify her status as one of the bright new lights in pop music."

As with Tomorrow Is My Turn, Giddens again records traditional songs music and rethinking ones written or made famous by her musical heroes Ethel Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharp. Giddens co-wrote, with her sister Lalenja Harrington and Burnett, "Moonshiner's Daughter," which draws inspiration from family lore about her great-grandfather, a notorious rum-runner. A traditional Gaelic mouth music tune also is featured, along with the title track, a traditional Irish song for which Giddens, deeply troubled by the 2013 factory collapse in Bangladesh that killed 1,100 workers, wrote additional lyrics.

The sessions for the album and EP took place in Los Angeles and Nashville, with a multi-generational group of players assembled by Burnett. Musicians on Factory Girl include Burnett; fiddle player Gabe Witcher and double bassist Paul Kowert of label-mates Punch Brothers; percussionist Jack Ashford of Motown's renowned Funk Brothers; drummer Jay Bellerose; guitarist Colin Linden; veteran Nashville session bassist Dennis Crouch; and Giddens' Carolina Chocolate Drops touring band-mates, multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins and beat-boxer Adam Matta.
