The beloved Jefferson nickel coin had Sclag's designed until 2004, when the "Westward Journey" Nickels came to life. Each year, from 2004-2006, new obverse and reverse designs for the Jefferson nickels were minted. During World War II, 1942-1945, the composition of the Jefferson nickel changed. No nickel was used to make the Jefferson coins during this period. Those nickels were made of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese, each weighing 1.59 grams. Jefferson nickels now and before the wartime period are made of 75% copper and 25% nickel, each weighing 5 grams. All Jefferson nickels are 21.2 mm in diameter.2.
